Unstable Sense of Shelf

,

  • I’m a chronic overthinker, an eternal never-starter. I will talk myself out of doing nothing at all. Maybe I should say I was this person. I’m now a sometimes-starter, close-my-eyes-very-tight before I jump into the most shallow puddle type of person. (All with the help of my incredible family and friends and a little something called “the right medication”.)

Why did I want to start this? I’ve missed writing (and on LiveJournal, especially), I have been enjoying writing book reviews on TheStorygraph and I wanted to find another place to start sharing some of them, and (this is going to seem like a depressing non sequitur) my dad died suddenly earlier this year, and since that has happened my life has been topsy-turvy in a way that is hard to explain. Sometimes I will catch myself looking out a window and being lost in thought for what feels like two minutes and it has actually been forty-five, maybe an hour. Maybe two hours. He was never an overthinker. If anything he was the complete opposite. He dove head first into some really stupid things but he absolutely lived.

I think if I were to tell him I was putting off starting something as simple as a personal blog he would very likely laugh and say “why would you do that?” But then he would also immediately ask me how I could go about monetizing it. (Ever the capitalist.) I don’t miss that, but I miss him. So here’s to you, dad. And here’s to starting stuff.

The first post is always the hardest, so let’s just go ahead and publish this one, get it out of the way. -Shannon
